#162 Anti-Bullying Program: Bee True To You

By lefkos

Let SmartCash help this great cause which goes to inner city schools around the country and educates children about bullying and empowers them to tackle it. This is done through the use of music and a very entertaining show starring Tobi and BTTY the DJ (a DJ in a bee costume!)

Note: This proposal had been updated on Feb 7, 2017 to include two additional items.

Hey everyone!

I just had the pleasure of experiencing a wonderful anti-bullying showcase here in New York and I would love to help the talented young woman who put it together, expand her program.

The Program:
Bee True To You (https://www.betrue2you.com/2)

BTTY is an anti-bullying campaign based out of New York City whose mission is to reduce the occurrences of bullying by educating and empowering children (and adults) through music!

The Founder
Tobi, the founder of BTTY is a singer whose talent in singing is only matched by her will to help others. As an adoptee, she endured bullying growing up and has made it her mission to “take the sting out of bullying” by doing what she does best: singing.

She earned her BFA from Montclair State University and made her off-Broadway debut in Freckleface The Musical, based on the New York Times bestselling book by Julianne Moore. She toured internationally in the cast of Green Day’s American Idiot, and has shared the stage with Green Day, The Hives, Danzig, Die Antwoord, Flogging Molly, and Linkin Park. She has provided live backup vocals for Rachel Platten, Andy Grammer, Gogol Bordello, and Kelly Rowland. Her vocals can also be heard on the soundtrack to Patti Cake$, which premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival.

Tobi currently tours with Gogol Bordello as a singer, dancer, and percussionist. She appears as a guest vocalist on “Did It All”, the first track off Gogol’s 2017 album Seekers and Finders. When she isn’t traveling the world, she enjoys partnering with Concerts in Motion to bring music to nursing homes, soup kitchens, and hospitals.
Tobi eagerly anticipates the upcoming release of her debut EP Puzzle Piece, through which she shares her inspiring story of self-discovery: becoming her most authentic self, and developing her personal motto - “Be true to you”.

In 2015 Tobi took her motto a step further and founded Be True to You: a musical, interactive anti-bullying program that empowers kids and teens to “Take the Sting - Out of Bullying” through education and original pop/rock songs. Be True to You has received accolades from parents and teachers alike. For her advocacy work, Tobi was the honored recipient of Meaningful World’s International Youth Peace Award at the United Nations in 2016.

Here is a short video of Tobi discussing BTTY: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8RScnXr98Go

Why it’s good for Smartcash

  • Increased brand awareness: Tobi has agreed to include a “Sponsored by smartcash” sticker along with our logo on her banner for the next 9 months
  • SmartCash will receive special mention on the art of an upcoming music album
  • SmartCash will receive special mention inside an upcoming children's book
  • Better our public image: Supporting an anti-bullying program will increase our public persona by showing everyone we are a community that cares
  • Less bullies mean a better world for us to live in
  • We'll be supporting a cause that has a bee theme!

What I am asking for

Hello Everyone! My name is Ashley T (TOBI) and I am the Founder/ CEO and Artistic Director of this Anti-Bullying Program that @lefkos graciously made a proposal for. First off, Lefkos, thank you so much for believing in not only myself, but my program's mission and message to help and empower children by “Taking The Sting-out of Bullying”. And most importantly, thank you to the community of SmartCash for considering me for this Sponsorship! I wanted to take this time to create an account as it was mentioned to me, a member of the community on discord brought up that there should be more visibility than just a logo my banners, and album. I COMPLETELY agree with this. I would like to inform the community, should this sponsorship be granted to this program, I will most certainly add the SmartCash name and logo to Banners, Albums, a dedication in my children’s book, and website. As none of this would be possible without your support. In the past 3 years, I have visited 65 schools reaching around 25,000 children with my assembly program. However, educating children on the effects of bullying, and empowering them to be their truest self can’t just happen in schools. That is why I am trying to expand my reach through different platforms to help ensure that my message and mission will become a part of their everyday life. Should you have any other questions, comments and/or concerns please do not hestitate to reach out to me directly through here, or my email: Ashley@beetruetoyou.org. I greatly appreciate any help and support offered! -TOBI

Hi Tobi. First,I like the kind of endeavor you take on and I see your show rocks, Second, I f*** love Gogol Bordello so I hope this proposal goes through. I agree you should try your best to promote awareness of this project and new paradigm it represents. Please keep us up to date and if this becomes a successful long-term relationship, you could come back with a more ambitious proposal that may include a bigger production and some professional PR and/or mkt agency.

Thank you very much @fl0at1ng_p01nt for your comment and reaching out! I will most certainly keep you updated!... As an adoptee, I was bullied at a young age for my darker complexion, my large frizzy hair and for just looking... “ different ”. For not being able to confidently defend my own identity because I was unsure of what that was. For me, music was the one and only thing I could turn to, to help regain my confidence. ...Fast forward 20 years or so, upon graduating college I have been fortunate enough to be cast in several different professional theater shows which all had the same underlying message of overcoming struggles, discovering your truest self and accepting who you are. Something that continued to resonate with myself and something I’m sure many other people can relate to as well. It is because of my past experiences, the growth of my professional career as a singer, and my drive and passion to want to help others like myself... that Bee True To You was born... So to say, I believe in this program is an understatement. I have seen first hand how children, parents and teachers respond to the messages, the BEE character and myself, and I hear them singing my songs when they leave the assembly program. Which means... my messages (tied in to the music) is sticking with them. Hopefully, something they will bring home to their parents and share and continue to use in their own household.... This program thus far has been completely self-funded, and I have been a team of just 1. I have succeeded in bringing this program to 65 schools in 3 years, but without actual funding, I can't do NEARLY as much as I could with help and support. So truly, any contributions will continue to help bring this empowering program to schools and children ALL across the country!... Thank you all for listening to my story and reviewing my content!
